The calliper is a well-known and relatively commonly used measuring instrument. A slide with a movable jaw is placed on a slide with a scale. The scale has an origin in the fixed jaw. Measurement is made by sliding the movable jaw along the scale and reading the distance between the fixed and movable jaws, hence the name calliper. Many types of callipers allow the measurement to be read on a linear scale, dial face or digital display (LCD).
